How do you help the overweight child eat better without harming their emotional wellbeing? Most of us think about foodchanging the diet, taking away certain foods, or scaling way back on food amounts, but this can get out of hand, resulting in food restriction, dieting and other tactics that may backfire in the future. There are many ways to help the overweight child, including increasing physical activity, working on sleep and screen time habits, and of course, improving their food and nutrition. Many parents worry about what their child is eating, and how much. They get worried about calories, fat, and sugar. With all the attention on childhood obesity, wanting your child to make healthy food choices is natural. But, its not easy! While it can be tempting to put a child on a weight loss diet, you dont have to. And, its not advised because it can negatively impact your childs relationship with food, eating and their bodies. And yo-yo dieting (going on and off diets over the years) has been shown to damage metabolism, causing more weight gain that is harder to get off.The best overall approach to help the overweight child is to encourage healthy habits that support both their physical health and emotional wellbeing (which I include in my forthcoming book Kids Thrive at Every Size available in August 2024 but you can pre-order now!)In this video, Im outlining a few easy food changes for the overweight child so they eat better.
