Try this tamil village style curry made with mustard seeds (kadugu) known for its medicinal qualities. This is an easy to make curry / kuzhambu that can be made in under 30 minutes. Mustard curry is popular in East Indian cuisine, especially in Bengal but Tamil villages have their own version of mustard curry that's equally delicious. This spicy and tangy mustard curry goes well with hot rice, idlis and dosas; it even makes a perfect side for curd/yoghurt rice, fermented rice, kali/mudde and savoury puttu. INGREDIENTS:
1. Tamarind - size of 1 lemon
2. Sesame / Gingelly oil - 3 to 4 tbsp
3. Mustard seeds - 1/4 tsp + 3/4 tsp
4. Fenugreek seeds - 1/4 tsp
5. Split black gram - 1/2 tsp
6. Curry leaves - 1 sprig
7. Garlic cloves - 1/2 cup
8. Shallots - 25 to 30
9. Onion, medium - 1
10. Tomato, large - 1
11. Turmeric powder - 1/4 tsp
12. Kuzhambu chilli powder - 2 tsp (Substitute: Pure chilli powder - 1 tsp + coriander powder - 1.5 tsp)
13. Salt - to taste
14. Coconut pieces - 1/2 cup
15. Cumin seeds - 3/4 tsp
16. Asafoetida - 1/4 tsp
17. Water - as required
