1. In a large saucepan cook the onions & garlic in butter until golden brown. 2. Add water, sherry and bouillon; bring to a boil. 3. Reduce heat, cover, simmer 30 minutes to blend flavors. 4. Slice 6 pieces of bread 3/4" thick, butter and toast in the broiler. 5. Place soup in 6 oven proof soup bowls. 6. Top each with a slice of bread and cheese. 7.
