1. Melt chocolate in boiling water, cool. 2. cream butter and sugar until fluffy. 3. add egg yolks, 1 at a time and beat well after each. 4. add melted chocolate and vanilla. 5. mix well. 6. sift together; salt, soda, and flour. 7. add alternately with buttermilk to chocolate mixture, beating well. (until smooth). 8. fold in beaten egg whites. 9. pour into 3 - 8 or 9" cake pans, lined on bottoms with wax paper. 10. Bake in moderate over 350 degrees @ 30-40 minutes. 11. Cool, frost tops only.
