1. Place sugar and water in a heavy 3- to 4-quart saucepan. 2. Bring to a boil over high heat, stirring until sugar dissolves. 3. Insert 4 cloves in a ring around the top of each apple. 4. Place apples side by side in the pan and baste with the syrup. 5. Cover and reduce heat to low. 6. Simmer, basting occasionally, 15 minutes, or until apples are tender. 7. Let cool in syrup. 8. Serve in individual dishes. 9. Pile whipped cream in the center of each apple. 10. Top with a tablespoon of the syrup. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------
