Its best to use sweet or yellow onions.Heat oil and butter on medium high heat in a skillet. Add the onions and saute about 5-10 minutes, stirring routinely.Reduce heat to medium and add salt and garlic powder and continue to stir as needed. As the onions cook down, add a little wine or Worcestershire sauce to keep the onions juicy, or just a sprinkling of water. Continue cooking until the onions are rich and caramel colored. Dont be in a hurry, it might take 30 minutes to achieve perfectly caramelized onions, and the wait is worth it. In a bowl, mix the softened cream cheese and a spoonful of sour cream.Chop up the caramelized onions well and stir into the mix. Stir until the ingredients are well incorporated. You can adjust the amount of sour cream to make the dip as creamy as you like. The dip will firm up as the onions cool. For color, stir in a little fresh parsley or green onion tops, but only use the fresh green onion if eating the same day. This dip is tasty, but like most dips itll be even tastier if you can make it a day ahead of time to allow the flavors to meld.
