Big pharma.

I will never ever forget the look on my physicians face when one year, I asked her, Why? when she recommended a vaccine Id never heard of. She then proceeded to provide a reason I couldnt really understand. I asked her, Is it effective? Does it actually do what youre saying it does? She paused. Well we dont really know if this one will work the way its supposed to. In that case, Ill pass, and we sat there for a few secondsher in what I looked to be stunned silence, and me feeling incredibly awkward for displeasing my doctor. Now, keep in mind, I had already said YES to the two other vaccines she was pressing on me at that appointment (two Id heard of and was familiar with). It was just this third one that I elected to forego (at that appointment).
.
Before you make any snap judgments, I encourage you listen to the entire episode (L.I.B.). Ive spent the past several HOURS listening and re-listening to this episode with Dr. Chutkan and it is incredible. Weve received so much positive feedback already and, not surprisingly, there were literally 17 different excerpts I wanted to include (Im not joking) and there is no way to do even one of them justice in less than 60 seconds. That said, I think we can all agree that in this countryparticularly in light of the new Medicare legislation thats going to take effecta substantial power imbalance between us, as consumers, and Big Pharma, is reality. Thus, however uncomfortable it makes us (and believe me, I hate displeasing anyone!), we need to practice asking questions like why at our annual physicals or doctors appointments. Hopefully, our doctors will be able to answer that question better than the one in my story above. But if they dont, its ok to press them as much as they press us.
