Cooking with Kids - Butter in a Jar!

This is part recipe, part science experiment! Did you know that you can make your own butter at home super easy? All you need is some double cream and a jar!

For this recipe it's best to use double cream / whipping cream / heavy cream. It won't work with single cream.

Just pour it into the jar and shake for about 10 minutes. The cream will go through several stages. Firstly it will get thick like it's been whipped. Then it will start to separate and look almost curdled. Then finally the buttermilk will come away leaving the butter. Shake for a couple more minutes once this starts to happen.

The buttermilk can be used in baking. It's great for certain bread recipes or is delicious used as a marinade for fried chicken or onion rings!
