How I Make an Old Fashioned Cocktail - Cocktails After Dark
The Old Fashioned Cocktail, or the Whiskey Old Fashioned Cocktail... or even before it was 'Old Fashioned' it was just the Whiskey Cocktail; is one of the 6 Mother Cocktails that gave rise to all other cocktails. Or so the theory goes.

Today we look at the history of the Old Fashioned Cocktail by looking through my collection of classic historical cocktail books. There are so many variations of this classic whisky cocktail, with every cocktail book author giving it their own spin. Some versions veer into Manhattan Cocktail territory, while others look suspiciously like the Sazerac Cocktail. At the core of this whiskey cocktail are the Spirit, Bitters, Sugar, and Water.
We make a Bourbon Old Fashioned, and a Rye Old Fashioned using the recipe found in Jerry Thomas' 1887 Bartenders Guide. So we cover how to make a bourbon old fashioned and how to make a whiskey old fashioned.

Old Fashioned Cocktail Ingredients:
3 or 4 dashes gum syrup (or rich simple syrup)
2 dashes Angostura bitters
1-2 dashes orange bitters
2 oz Whisk(e)y or Bourbon
lemon and / or orange peel as garnish

In a mixing glass, combine syrup, bitters and whiskey.
Fill glass with ice and stir until cold, and desired dilution is attained.
Strain into a rocks glass with a single large lump of ice.
Garnish with a lemon and or orange peel.
