Surinam Cherry Tree - eating in the yard

Do you have a surinam cherry tree in your yard? Surinam cherry hedges and shrub trees are often planted as ornamentals, but the fruit is quite tasty when ripe and plucked from the plant. In some areas, the surinam cherry is considered a nuisance plant, but I find the tiny pumpkin shaped cherries to be tangy and tasty when eaten at the right moment. Only pick cherries if they are a deep red, and do not tug them off of the tree. The cherries will pull away easily when ready to be eaten.
