Vatali Dal Dal Recipes Sanjeev Kapoor Khazana

A simply delicious Maharashtrian recipe made using bengal gram or chana dal. Usually prepared as tea time snack, it requires minimum efforts and gives 100% satisfaction.

VATALI DAL

Ingredients

1 cups Bengal gram, soaked for 3-4 hours, and drained
3-4 green chillies, stemmed
2-3 tbsps oil
1 tsp mustard seeds
1 tsp cumin seeds
tsp asafoetida (hing)
10-12 curry leaves
tsp turmeric powder
1 tsp red chilli powder
Salt to taste
2 tbsps chopped fresh coriander leaves + for garnish
cup scraped fresh coconut

Method

1. Grind soaked Bengal gram and green chillies to a coarse paste.
2. Heat oil in a pan. Add mustard seeds and let them splutter. Add cumin seeds and asafoetida and mix well.
3. Add curry leaves, turmeric powder, and red chilli powder and mix well. Cook for 30 seconds.
4. Add the ground paste and mix well. Continuously stir and cook for 1-2 minutes. Add salt and mix well. Sprinkle cup water, mix, cover and cook for 8-10 minutes, stirring in between every few minutes.
5. Add coriander leaves and coconut and mix well. Cook for 1-2 minutes.
6. Serve hot garnished with coriander leaves.
