1931 Old Time Brownies Recipe - Old Cookbook Show
The old cookbook recipe today is from a 1931 General Foods corporate cookbook - these old cookbooks were handed out as promotional advertising for the products that General Foods made. Glen cooks an Old Time Brownies Recipe.
Since people seem to be having trouble understanding the idea of a 'Square of Chocolate', 1 square = 1 ounce.

1 ¾ cups sifted Swans Down cake flour
¾ teaspoon soda
1 teaspoon salt
1 ½ cups sugar
5 egg yolks
2 ½ squares Baker's unsweetened chocolate
1 cup sour cream
1 cup walnut meats
1 teaspoon vanilla

Sift flour once, measure, add soda and salt, and sift together 3 times. Add sugar to egg yolks, creaming well. Add chocolate and blend. Add flour alternately with cream a small amount at a time. Beat after each addition until smooth. Add nuts and vanilla. Pour into deep greased cup-cake pans, filling them about ⅔ full. Bake in a hot oven (400ºF) 15 minutes. Makes 3 dozen brownies.
