1931 U.S.A. Election Cake Recipe Our neighbours to the South have a Presidential election this week... So let's harken back to Presidential elections past with this Election Cake Recipe. This is a depression era, prohibition era recipe put out by Aunt Sammy (Uncle Sam's Wife) and the U.S. Government.

Ingredients:
Sponge:
½ yeast cake
½ cup lukewarm water
½ cup flour
½ teaspoon sugar

Rest of the cake:
½ cup butter or other fat
1 cup brown sugar
1 egg
½ cup milk
2 cups sifted flour
1 teaspoon cinnamon
¼ teaspoon cloves
¼ teaspoon nutmeg
1 teaspoon salt
1 cup chopped raisins
½ cup chopped figs or dates

Method:
To make the sponge, soften the yeast in the lukewarm water, add the flour and sugar, and beat well.
Put aside in a warm place to lighten for an hour.
In the mean time mix the fat and sugar and add the beaten egg and the milk.
Sift together the flour, spices, and salt.
Then combine all the ingredients including the sponge and mix well.
Pour the batter into a well greased tube pan.
Cover and stand in a warm place to rise for 3 or 4 hours.
Bake one hour in a moderate oven (350ºF).
