We have been on the hunt for laksam ever since we were in Kelantan and were thrilled when one of our subscribers contacted us to let us know about a spot she visits almost every day for breakfast which serves laksam! We head to Shah Alam in Selangor, Malaysia to eat up a storm.

We loved trying this noodle dish which is especially popular in the eastern states of Peninsular Malaysia (Kelantan and Terengganu). The laksam we sampled in this video was a Kelantanese version made by an Aunty who has been selling this dish in the same spot for nearly 20 years. Laksam is made up of a rice noodles rolls cut up into bite sized pieces, a gravy made up of coconut milk and ground fish (sardine), fresh vegetables and sambal. The broth tastes intensely of fish and is smooth and creamy. The vegetables and herbs are fragrant and the sambal adds a great spice. We love laksam!

We also sample a plate of nasi dagang which is a common breakfast dish in Kelantan made up of a mixture of sticky rice and normal rice, fried coconut, cucumber pickles and a side dish. Our favourite is gulai ikan tongkol a local tuna curry-like dish. It’s delicious!

Our morning turns into a bit of a jalan jalan cari makan food-hunting adventure! We head to a popular nasi campur (mixed rice spot) and sample some kambing korma (mutton curry) and pajeri nanas (pineapple curry). Warung Salumar where we are eating has an array of delicious looking dishes for nasi campur and we can’t wait to return to sample them properly.

Finally we finish with some traditional Malay desserts. Bubur or sweet porridge including a corn, black sticky rice and mung bean version plus some fermented tapioca root (tapai ubi) and tapioca root covered in coconut and sugar.

Thanks so much to Foziah, Huda, Asha, Amy and Afiqah for an awesome morning discovering more of Malaysia’s amazing food.
