A flavourful dal recipe which is generally served at restaurants and is super comforting for all.

DAL MIZAZ

Ingredients

¾ cup skinless split green gram (dhuli moong dal), soaked for 3 hours and drained
¼ cup split pigeon peas (toor dal), soaked for 3 hours and drained
½ tsp turmeric powder
¼ tsp asafoetida (hing)
2 tbsps butter
1 tbsp oil
1 tsp cumin seeds
1 tbsp chopped garlic
½ inch ginger, cut into thin strips
1 medium onion, finely chopped
1 medium tomato, finely chopped
Sal to taste
½ tsp red chilli powder
2 tsps coriander powder
½ tsp cumin powder
½ tsp garam masala powder
2 tbsps chopped fresh coriander leaves
2 tbsps chopped fresh mint leaves
1 tsp lemon juice
Fresh mint sprig for garnish

Method

1. Combine the skinless split green gram, split pigeon peas, ¼ tsp turmeric powder, asafoetida and 3½ cups water in a pressure cooker. Cover and cook under pressure for 3-4 whistles.
2. Heat butter and oil in anon-stick deep pan, add cumin seeds and let the colour change. Add garlic and ginger and sauté for 1 minute. Add onion, mix and cook till it turns golden brown.
3. Add tomato and salt, mix and cook till the it turns soft and pulpy. Add red chilli powder, coriander powder, cumin powder and remaining turmeric powder and sauté for 1 minute.
4. Add the cooked gram mixture and mix well. Add 1 cup water, mix and cook till the mixture comes to a boil.
5. Add garam masala powder, coriander leaves and mint leaves and mix well. Switch the heat off and add lemon juice, mix and serve hot garnished with mint sprig.
