Ellu Podi Sadam (Sesame Rice) By Preetha | India Food Network

Sesame Seeds is Ellu in Tamil. There are two types of Sesame seeds one in black and other in white. Ellu sadam is a very simple rice recipe which is generally cooked during the Saturdays of the tamil month Puratasi. It is a speciality neivedhayam for lord balaji (venkatajalapathy) along with paruppu payasam and ulundu vadai.

For Ellu Podi (For Sesame seed powder)
Black Sesame seeds- 4 tbsp
Urad dal- 1 tbsp
Dried red chillies- 2 to 3
Whole Hing/ Asafoetida- a pinch
Oil- 1 drop to fry hing
Salt- to taste

For Rice
Sesame seed oil- 1 tbsp
Ghee- 1 tsp
Garlic- 4 to 6, sliced/whole/ crushed (as required)
Mustard seeds- ½ tsp
Urad dal- ½ tsp
Dried red chillies- 1 no, roughly chopped
Curry leaves- few
Ellu podi/ Sesame seed powder- 1 ½ to 2 tbsp
Cooked rice- 1 bowl
Salt- to taste
Coriander leaves- for garnish

Tips while you Cook:
One can make this recipe with white sesame seeds as well. Some recipes call for a combination of both. In that case, toast each separately and use to prepare powder.

If one doesn't want to toss rice with too many ingredients, just combine ghee, steamed rice and the prepared powder and mix well. Have with appalam and curds.
