Sesame Seeds is Ellu in Tamil. There are two types of Sesame seeds one in black and other in white. Ellu sadam is a very simple rice recipe which is generally cooked during the Saturdays of the tamil month Puratasi. It is a speciality neivedhayam for lord balaji (venkatajalapathy) along with paruppu payasam and ulundu vadai.For Ellu Podi (For Sesame seed powder)Black Sesame seeds- 4 tbspUrad dal- 1 tbspDried red chillies- 2 to 3Whole Hing/ Asafoetida- a pinchOil- 1 drop to fry hingSalt- to tasteFor RiceSesame seed oil- 1 tbspGhee- 1 tspGarlic- 4 to 6, sliced/whole/ crushed (as required)Mustard seeds- ½ tspUrad dal- ½ tspDried red chillies- 1 no, roughly choppedCurry leaves- fewEllu podi/ Sesame seed powder- 1 ½ to 2 tbspCooked rice- 1 bowlSalt- to tasteCoriander leaves- for garnishTips while you Cook:One can make this recipe with white sesame seeds as well. Some recipes call for a combination of both. In that case, toast each separately and use to prepare powder.If one doesn't want to toss rice with too many ingredients, just combine ghee, steamed rice and the prepared powder and mix well.
