Monte Cristo Sandwich Recipe Disneyland Monte Cristo Sandwich Chef Tips

Hi guys! Today were at Disneyland in New Orleans Square, which is famous for their Monte Cristo Sandwich! The Disneyland Monte Cristo Sandwich recipe was created in 1966 at the Blue Bayou Restaurant, but its origins go back to about 1910 in Paris, when it was first served in their cafes.

The first true Monte Cristo sandwich, called the croque monsieur, was made with white bread, ham and gruyere cheese - then fried in clarified butter to a golden brown and served with salad or french onion soup in the bistros. If a fried egg was added to the top, it was called a Croque Madame. These delicious sandwiches are still served in Parisian cafes.

The Disney Monte Cristo sandwich went a step further - in true American style - by placing the sandwich in a rich pancake batter - deep frying it with sliced ham, turkey and Swiss cheese - and then topping with a generous coating of fresh raspberry or blackberry jam. At Disneyland in California, the Cafe Orleans Monte Cristo Sandwich is also available for vegetarians made with Swiss, Brie and Mozzarella cheeses.

Of course you are paying for the ambiance, but the Blue Bayou Monte Cristo Sandwich isnt cheap - about $28 (or about $21 at Cafe Orleans), so it makes sense to make it at home yourself and save a ton of money. In fact, for the price of just two sandwiches, I was able to buy myself a new deep fryer to make this recipe!

Many people like to eat this with a side of garlic fries, and its certainly rich enough to share between two people!

Just remember that even though this deep fried sandwich weighs in at about 1,122 calories, you can easily work it off at Disneyland. The average visitor walks between 8-15 miles during a daily visit to the park!

Disney Monte Cristo Sandwich Recipe

Serves 4

3 cups canola oil, for frying (approximately, depending on if you are deep frying or frying in a pan)

Batter:
1 3/4 cups water
1 egg
1 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon baking powder

For Sandwich:
8 slices artisan bread, challah or brioche
8 thin slices Black forest ham
8 thin slices turkey
8 thin slices Swiss cheese (*Vegetarians can sub the ham and turkey for sliced brie and mozzarellalla)

Topping:
Powdered sugar, as needed
Raspberry preserves (or substitute blackberry or marionberry), as needed
Fresh red grapes or strawberries as a side

How to Make the Monte Cristo Sandwich:

In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the water, egg, flour, salt and baking powder until it becomes smooth and like pancake batter.
2. Preheat your deep fryer to 365 F. Alternatively you can heat a large deep frying pan with about 1 inch of canola oil until it reaches the same temperature.
3. Layer your sandwich with one slide of bread, 2 slices ham, 2 slices turkey and 2 slices of Swiss (or make your vegetarian version by subbing the brie, Swiss and Mozzarella).
4. When the oil is hot, deep the sandwich into the batter, let the excess drip off, then place in the oil. Cook until each side becomes golden brown.
5. Remove from oil, set on plate with paper towels to drain, and the top with powdered sugar and serve with berry jam.
