If you're in Japan you must visit an izakaya or a Japanese pub for at least one meal. It's a quintessential Japanese experience. But it can also be intimidating. Most menus are in Japanese and it can be a bit confusing to know what to order and what the protocol is.

Like any Western pub, izakaya serve a range of drinks from beer, sake to whisky highballs which are really popular in Japan. Usually you start with lighter dishes like edamame or cold tofu and move on to heavier dishes like tori karaage (fried chicken). Dishes are shared and you order a few plates at a time- not all your dishes at once.

We use guessing, google translate and also look at what other diners are ordering in order to put together a meal. It's a really fun night out so go for it!

We hope we've inspired you to eat and explore like a traveler, not a tourist. Subscribe to our food and travel channel for more Japanese food videos.

The izakaya we ate at in Osaka is located directly outside the exit/entrance of Kamishinjo Station in Osaka. It's located on a corner spot and is open from 5:00pm onwards.
