Quick, easy, cheap meals: Sometimes we need dinner in a hurry.

There are times when we need dinner in a hurry, but we don't have to rely on fast food or take-out. When possible, plan for these times and have some meals cooked and in the freezer. This makes for a lot of convenience because you can get one out and pop it in the oven in much less time than going for take-out. Your meal will be much healthier, also.

If you haven't got any freezer meals ready, you need to be able to put something else on the table. As soon as possible, put a pot of water on to boil. You can prepare some vegetables and sides while the water is heating and then you can use it for pasta, rice, potatoes, grains such as barley or bulger. Whatever you have on hand. If there's no meat thawed or pre-cooked then don't worry about it. If you have eggs, they can be hard-boiled in less than 10 minutes and then quick-cooled with cold water so the shells peel more easily. You can chop these up to put with a salad or devil them to serve with the pasta or potatoes you are cooking.

Quick, easy, cheap meals: Planning your grocery list.

Making quick, easy, cheap meals depends on having some food stocked in your pantry and freezer. A good grocery list can make all the difference in keeping your supply up to date. There are basically two ways to plan your grocery list. The first way, is to plan out a week's worth of meals and then making your grocery list off of that weekly plan. The other way is to shop for the foods that are on sale, and then make your menu from the foods you have. I find that a mixture of the two plans works well for me. I plan most meals, but change my plan to accommodate foods that are on a really good sale.

Quick, easy, cheap meals: Have at least one emergency meal ready.

As much as you try to plan dinner and shopping ahead of time, there are those times when an emergency arises and you find yourself with only a few minutes before meal time and you have no plan and nothing ready. For these times, I have at least one emergency meal ready. I assemble enough cans of food for one meal into a grocery shopping bag and tie it up and put it in a special place in the pantry. On those hectic or frantic days I can just pull out the bag, open the cans, and within a few minutes a meal is ready. One example may be: Gourmet soup you don't have every day, some unusual crackers and canned fruit for dessert. This is only limited by your imagination (and what foods are available in cans or packages.) This one tactic alone can save you a bundle of cash and you can eat a nice meal without the high fat of fast food.
