Khao Tom Bawon (ข้าวต้มบวร) is a long standing Thai Chinese khao tom restaurant located in the Banglamphu old district of Bangkok, just a stone's throw from Khao San backpacker area. The restaurant feels like it’s someone’s home, just kind of in their garage and you could easily just walk right past it and think it’s just a catering business instead of an actual restaurant. But step inside and the restaurant open up into a full room with multiple dining rooms that are both indoor and outdoor. They have an extensive menu of Thai Chinese dishes, and all the specialities of the restaurant are located at the front of the menu.

Here are the foods we ate at Khao Tom Bawon (ข้าวต้มบวร):

Boo kai dong yam (ปูไข่ดองยำ) - This is one of their most well known dishes, crabs that include eggs, and they are served raw in a Thai salad with plenty of chilies and garlic and lots of lime juice. It was like a sweet and sour blue crab dish, with meaty crab filled with eggs, and lots of dressing. It was a little sweet, but overall excellent and with so much garlic and chilies!

Pla jaramed neung nam daeng (ปลาจาระเม็ดนึ่งน้ำแดง) - The next dish we tried was pla jaramed neung nam daeng (ปลาจาระเม็ดนึ่งน้ำแดง), a pampano fish, which was just the tail, which looked like it was first deep fried, then stewed in a thick gravy sauce with lots of ginger and green onions. It was quite mild in flavor, but good along with rice.

Gai doon fak manao dong (ไก่ตุ๋นฟักมะนาวดอง) - Chicken soup with winter melon and pickled lime was the next Thai Chinese style dish we tried at Khao Tom Bawon (ข้าวต้มบวร). It had an almost medicinal flavor to it, with tender chunks of fall apart tender winter melon and the chicken was so soft it was to the point of dissolving.

Pak boong fai daeng (ผักบุ้งไฟแดง) - Finally to end our meal, we just had a simple plate of pak boong fai daeng (ผักบุ้งไฟแดง), stir fried water morning glory with chilies and garlic. It also included some fermented soy bean sauce so it had a nice saltiness to it.

Khao Tom Bawon (ข้าวต้มบวร) is a legendary restaurant in Bangkok, and I only wish we would have been able to try some more of the stir fried dishes on their menu.
