Thank you to Ronnie for this restaurant recommendation!

One of the biggest populations of Chinese Thais originate from Chaoshan (潮汕地区) region of Guangdong in China, which is often referred to as Teochew (แต้จิ๋ว) in Thailand. And so you’ll notice that lots of Thai dishes, and plenty of Thai street food dishes have origins in Teochew. But along with Chinese Thai street food, sitting down for a full authentic Thai Chinese Teochew (อาหารแต้จิ๋ว) meal, is one of the great authentic Chinese food experiences in Bangkok.

Tang Jua Lee (ร้านตั้งจั้วหลี) is a restaurant located in Bangkok’s Chinatown that’s legendary for their Chinese Teochew food. My friend Joel and I, along with Ying and Micah decided to eat here for dinner one evening. We ordered mainly their specialties:

Fish and taro steamboat (หม้อไฟเผือกปลากระพง) - Good old fashioned charcoal steamboat is what Tang Jua Lee (ร้านตั้งจั้วหลี) made a name for themselves. It was plain and pure and packed with flavor.

Chinese sashimi (ปลาดิบจีน) - The Chinese sashimi, which was some type of bighead carp, was really the dish that impressed me the most. The fish was soft and didn’t have any kind of fishy taste to it. The crust of sesame seeds is what really made it outstanding.

Oyster omelet (ออส่วน) - A fried oyster omelet is another classic Thai Chinese Teochew dish, and although it was excellent, I almost forgot about it because of how good the other dishes were.

Cold goat (แพะเย็น) - Finally, the last dish we couldn’t resist ordering on their menu because it sounded so interesting was cold goat. The goat was prepared like ham style, and apart from the mayonnaise it was served with, it was delicious and unique.
