Thai Food Surprise! Spicy and Sour Red Ant Egg Soup

Thai spicy and sour red ant egg soup in typical Isaan (northeastern Thailand) style was grandma's surprise for our family a couple of nights ago for dinner. I haven't had it for a couple of years, but apparently she found the eggs at the market for under $2.00 USD and bought some for us.

Ant egg soup is really quite delicious. The ants and eggs are a very small part of the soup, as you can see by the eggs and ants floating in the soup in the video. They have a slightly tangy or sharp taste to them - tart I guess is the word.

If you get a chance to eat ant egg soup, I suggest you try it!

There are photos at the article we just did about this video over here:

Thailand has a lot of strange foods to eat, but there are only a couple that western people can't usually stomach. The horse pee egg was something that turned hubby's stomach before he ever had a bite, and the egg has no horse pee in it at all. It's just a funny name!

Ant eggs have protein and they are plentiful during certain times of the year. For the last couple of months we have seen many of the nests in the trees in Southern Thailand. Usually when collectors grab the branch to cut it and get the nest there are about 1,000 red weaver ants that come out to protect the eggs. Some people dunk the nest in water and that usually does the trick.
