Tomato Sambar is not only easy to make its delicious too!
Sambar Tomato Sambar
Ingredients for Tomato Sambar:
Cherry tomatoes - 200 gms or medium tomatoes 5 or 6
Tamarind - 1 lemon sized
Green chillies - 1 big
Any brand sambar powder - 1 tsp
Tur dal - 1 cup
Oil - as reqd
Ghee - as reqd
Coconut powder or freshly grated coconut - 2 tsp
Mustard seeds - 1 tsp
Fenugreek seeds - 1 tsp
Asaefotida - tsp
Salt to taste
Curry leaves - optional
Ingredients for grinding for Tomato Sambar:
Chana dal - 1 tsp
Coriander seeds - 1 tbsp
Red chillies - 5 or 6
Method for the grinding for Tomato Sambar:
In 1 tsp oil, roast chana dal, coriander seeds and red chillies till golden
Grind into a smooth powder
Keep aside
Method for making Tomato Sambar:
Pressure cook 1 cup Tur dal till soft and keep aside
Soak tamarind in 2 cups of water and extract the tamarind water and keep aside
Heat some oil and ghee in a wide pan or kadai
Splutter mustard seed
Add fenugreek seeds and let them turn golden
Now add the Cherry tomatoes or cut medium sized tomatoes
Add slit green chillies
Saut everything over medium flame
Add the tamarind water
Add sambar powder and salt
Allow everything to cook together over medium flame
When the raw smell of tamarind and sambar powder disappears add the cooked Tur dal
Let everything blend together
Now add the roasted and ground mix that we made
Allow everything to cook together over medium flame
Meanwhile heat 1 tsp of ghee in a small pan
Fry fresh coconut or coconut powder in the ghee
Add the ghee fried coconut to the boiling Tomato Sambar
Add asaefotida
Adjust consistency of Tomato Sambar by adding boiling water
Garnish with curry leaves
Savour the delicious Tomato Sambar with steamed rice and ghee or with crunchy Dosa or steaming Idlis or Vadas
