My TOP 5 Grocery Shopping Tips for QUALITY OVER QUANTITY - Costco and JONS Market Haul

The pantry and freezer are well stocked with staples (rice, pasta, soup stocks, and condiments) so today I was shopping for mostly fresh perishable items and a few special treats.

Here are the "Top 5" strategies I use before going grocery shopping to help spend my money as wisely as possible for my family:

1) Make your grocery list or meal plan based off the Circulars and Sales, not a pre-set meal plan
2) Shop Costco first (with your list and circulars in hand), so you can price compare on the spot - if it's cheaper at Costco, grab it there!
3) Buy highly perishable produce in smaller quantities and loose (you'll get only what you need and won't pay for packaging)
4) Buy sturdy foods in bulk (last month I bought 10lbs of carrots and 3 lbs of sour cream at Costco and we are steadily working our way through them, and they're still good)
5) Pace yourself! I know I will likely grocery shop 2 or more times per week. Today I visited 2 stores, but I know what other items are a better deal at a third store. When I finish the fruit I bought today, I'll restock the house with sale items I want to get from that other store, and will snag those deals a few days later. This also staggers when we are buying our produce, so that it is less likely to all go bad at once or not get used in a timely manner, and go to waste.

Tip: My daughters love to "shop the circulars" and I let them circle their favorite items, or their grocery store wish list, with a pen or crayon. They are learning that whatever is depicted is on sale, so a money saving option for our family, and they also see it as a sort of puzzle or image search (aka, what popsicles are on sale?! Quick! Circle those.). :)
