The popular accompaniment prepared with raw bananas is enjoyed with sambhar rice in a typical South-Indian meal.VAZHAKAI PODI MASIngredients4-5 raw bananas, peeled and cut into ½ cm pieces and soaked in buttermilk½ cup split Bengal gram (chana dal)½ cup coriander seeds6-8 dried red chillies, stemmed¾ cup scraped coconutSalt to taste2 pinches of asafoetida2 tbsps coconut oil½ tsp mustard seeds1 tsp split skinless black gram ( dhuli urad dal)A sprig of curry leaves½ tsp turmeric powder 3 tbsps scraped coconut + to sprinkleMethod1. Dry roast chana dal for 2 minutes on medium heat. Add coriander seeds and roast for a minute.2. Add dried red chillies and roast for a minute. Add coconut and sauté till golden brown.3. Add salt and half the asafoetida and mix well. Allow to cool and grind to fine powder.4. Heat coconut oil in a nonstick pan. Add mustard seeds and once they start to splutter, add urad dal, remaining asafoetida and sauté for a few seconds. Add curry leaves and mix well.5. Drain the raw bananas and add to the pan. Add salt, turmeric powder and mix well.6. Cover and cook for 8-10 minutes.7. Add 3 tbsps of prepared powder and mix well. Add coconut and mix well.8.
