The popular accompaniment prepared with raw bananas is enjoyed with sambhar rice in a typical South-Indian meal.
VAZHAKAI PODI MAS

Ingredients

4-5 raw bananas, peeled and cut into ½ cm pieces and soaked in buttermilk
½ cup split Bengal gram (chana dal)
½ cup coriander seeds
6-8 dried red chillies, stemmed
¾ cup scraped coconut
Salt to taste
2 pinches of asafoetida
2 tbsps coconut oil
½ tsp mustard seeds
1 tsp split skinless black gram ( dhuli urad dal)
A sprig of curry leaves
½ tsp turmeric powder
3 tbsps scraped coconut + to sprinkle

Method

1. Dry roast chana dal for 2 minutes on medium heat. Add coriander seeds and roast for a minute.
2. Add dried red chillies and roast for a minute. Add coconut and sauté till golden brown.
3. Add salt and half the asafoetida and mix well. Allow to cool and grind to fine powder.
4. Heat coconut oil in a nonstick pan. Add mustard seeds and once they start to splutter, add urad dal, remaining asafoetida and sauté for a few seconds. Add curry leaves and mix well.
5. Drain the raw bananas and add to the pan. Add salt, turmeric powder and mix well.
6. Cover and cook for 8-10 minutes.
7. Add 3 tbsps of prepared powder and mix well. Add coconut and mix well.
8. Sprinkle coconut on top and serve hot.
