1913? Black Hawk Cocktail - Cocktails After Dark

1913? Black Hawk Cocktail - Glen And Friends Cocktails After Dark
Today the theme is cocktails using ingredients I don't usually grab for the show, so today we look at Sloe Gin Cocktails.
Details about this Whisky and Sloe gin cocktail (or Rye and Sloe Gin, or Bourbon and Sloe Gin) are pretty sketchy. The earliest I can trace it back to is a book written in 1913 by Jacques Straub - if you know of an earlier version, please let me know. The Rye and Sloe Gin cocktail recipe then appears in a few cocktail books afterwards into the late 1940s and then starts to peter out. It could be that smaller cocktails that consist of just alcohol lost favour to cocktails with juices, sugar, and bitters.

Really was serious when I said that I'd like to collab with these channels:
@Whiskey Vault @Whiskey Tribe @It's Bourbon Night

Black Hawk Cocktail as it appears in the 1913 Straub's Manual:
Jigger Rye Whiskey
Jigger Sloe Gin
Stir
1 Cherry

We also try this cocktail with a couple of homegrown independent spirits from @Distillerie du St.Laurent and @Dillon's Small Batch Distillers

Here is the 2011 Robert Hess video I reference: https://youtu.be/mRhn-1agFvM You'll notice his later 1970s recipe uses lemon juice, and he comments that it's a little too tart.

We no longer do sponsorships or paid promotions of any kind; we tried it a couple of times but it never felt right. So if you want to support us, please subscribe, watch, comment and like the videos; maybe even go a step farther and recommend them to your friends and family. This channel is nothing without you our viewers! Thanks for watching the Old Cookbook Show and our Historical Cooking.
