"Say NO to Fad Diets" .. I was delighted to speak to Lindsay Russell on BBC The One Show for British Dietetic Association (@BDA_Dietitians ) about the issues with fad diets being promoted on social media. Here are some of the key messages that we discussed - you can watch the full piece on BBC iplayer (from Monday evening). There is SO MUCH misinformation and scaremongering online and most fad diets have a distinct lack of science and credibility behind them. They promise short term, quick results, but often don't result in any long-term benefits. One of the main issues is their One-Size-Fits-All Approach - Diets often disregard individual health needs, medical conditions, and nutritional requirements, which can be extremely damaging. Many fad diets promote extreme behaviours, for example the encouragement of extreme calorie restriction, excessive exercise, or unnecessary food eliminations. The psychological impact is real too - Unrealistic body images and goals can lead to poor self-esteem, body dysmorphia, and even disordered eating or eating disorders. The majority of content creators and influencers often are not qualified nutritionists or dietitians, and eat like me, to look like me messaging can be problematic, with clever sales tactics for diet products or supplements that may not be safe or effective. Please always question where your dietary information comes from and ideally seek advice from a healthy care professional such as a dietitian or a registered nutritionist.
