Chowli Batata is a humble, mildly spiced and typical Maharashtrian curry made with black eyed beads also commonly known as lobia, potatoes and spices combined together. This curry is an excellent side dish that can be accompanied with rice, roti or bhakri (jowar ki bhakri or bajre ki bhakri).

Ingredients
Coriander powder 1/2 Teaspoons
Red chilli powder 1/2 Teaspoons
Turmeric powder 1/4 Teaspoons
Hing (asafoetida) Pinch
Salt to taste
Onions, chopped 1 Numbers
Garlic cloves, crushed 1 Teaspoons
Green chillies, chopped 1-2 Numbers
Curry leaves few Springs
Oil 2 Tablespoons
Cumin seeds 1/2 Teaspoons
Mustard seeds 1/2 Teaspoons
Potatoes 3 Numbers
Black Eyed Beans or lobia, soaked overnight and boiled 1 Cup
Garam masala powder (optional) 1/2 Teaspoons
Water as needed
Tomato, chopped 2 Numbers
Freshly ground coconut paste 1 Tablespoons
Coriander leaves, chopped 1 Bunch

Directions:
1. Add oil in a hot pan and when the oil gets hot, add mustard seeds, cumin seeds, curry leaves, chopped green chillies, garlic, chopped onion and salt. Saute and fry the onions till they turn slightly golden in color.

2. Add hing, turmeric, red chilli powder, coriander powder, and garam masala powder (optional). Mix well and add potato pieces. Saute the mixture and little water. Cover the pan and cook the potatoes until they are soft.

3. Remove the lid and add chopped tomatoes, boiled black eyed peas and mix them thoroughly.

4. nbsp;Add water if required. Cook this for about 2 minutes or until it comes to a boil.

5. nbsp;Add finely ground fresh coconut and cook for a minute.

6. nbsp;Switch off the flame. Garnish with coriander leaves.
