GOAN FISH CURRY

Ingredients

2 medium pomfrets, cut into darnes
1 tablespoon oil
2 green chillies, slit
1 large onion, finely chopped
Salt to taste
1 lemon size tamarind ball, soaked and pulp removed
2 teaspoons malt vinegar
Steamed Basmati rice for serving
Fresh coriander leaf for garnishing
Paste
6 dried red chillies
2 teaspoons cumin seeds
15 garlic cloves
2 inch ginger, roughly chopped
2 tablespoons coriander seeds
½ cup scraped fresh coconut

Method

1. To prepare paste, coarsely grind together dried red chillies, cumin seeds, garlic cloves, ginger, coriander seeds and coconut alongwith ¼ cup water.
2. Heat oil in a deep non-stick pan. Add green chillies and sauté for 10 seconds. Add onion and sauté till translucent.
3. Add ground paste, sauté for 1 minute, cover and cook for 1-2 minutes. Add 1½ cups water, mix, cover and cook for 5 minutes.
4. Add fish darnes and salt, lightly mix, cover and cook for 3-4 minutes. Add tamarind pulp and malt vinegar, mix, cover and cook for 1 minute.
5. Garnish with a coriander leaf and serve hot with steamed Basmati rice.
