Hamburger Steak with Onion Mushroom Gravy Over Mashed Potatoes

Ingredients:
1 lb. ground beef
1 tsp. Garlic powder
tsp. Chile powder or more
large yellow onion, diced
3 white mushrooms, diced
2 cups beef broth
1 Tbsp. arrowroot
2 Tbsp. cold water
Pepper
Olive oil
5 gold potatoes, peeled, cut into chunks
1 tsp. Garlic powder
Salt to taste
cup milk, heated with the butter
3 Tbsp. butter

Directions:
Portion out the ground beef into equal size pattys. Sprinkle salt, garlic powder, chile powder and pepper on both sides of the beef. Work the spice into the patty. Just dont overwork the meat. Form into the desired shape.

Place the sliced potatoes into a stockpot and fill with cool water. Cook on the stove on high heat until it comes to a boil. Reduce heat to a low boil until the potatoes are fork tender. This should take around 15 minutes. Drain and keep warm in the pan.

Heat a large cast iron pan over medium high heat. Add 1 - 2 tsp. Olive to the pan, swirl it around and place the burgers in the pan. You want to sear the burgers for about 4 to 5 minutes per side.

Once the burgers are done, set them on a plate and cover with foil to keep warm. Lower the temperature on the cast iron pan to low and add the onion and mushrooms. Use a wooden spoon to scrape up the bits of meat and drippings left in the pan. Its called fond and where all the flavor is.

Cook the onion mixture for about 10 minutes. You might need to add another tablespoon of olive oil to the pan if it looks dry.

While this is cooking, add the arrowroot to the water and stir to dissolve.

After 10 minutes of cooking the onion, now its time to add the beef broth to the onions. Bring the temperature up to medium high to boil. Add salt, garlic powder, and pepper. Once it boils reduce the temperature to a simmer.

Slowly add the arrowroot and water mixture to the pan and whisk as you add it. Once the gravy is the consistency you like, stop adding arrowroot. Add the hamburger back to the pan, cover and simmer until the hamburger is done.

Now whats left is to whip up the potatoes. Pour the hot potatoes into a mixing bowl and add the hot milk and butter. Add a pinch of salt, pepper and a good amount of garlic powder. Use a potato masher to whip the potatoes. Add enough milk/butter mixture to get the consistency you like.

Serve immediately by placing a nice dollop of mashed potatoes, hamburger steak and lots of the delicious gravy.

Enjoy!
