This is an authentic Italian recipe as it comes from my husbands grandmother and she was from Italy. Man could that lady cook!

I am proud to be able to post her recipe here. Nana made these cookies every Christmas and they are yummy!

She never put chocolate on them, that's just my variation. You can do it or not. Her recipe calls for some whiskey or brandy and sweet vermouth but don't worry, it cooks out. Only the flavor remains and it's subtle.

Ingredients:
1/2 cup butter, softened
1/2 cup crisco or shortening
4 eggs
4 1/2 cups white flour, double sifted
1 Tbsp. baking powder
1 tsp. salt
1 to 1 1/2 cups of walnuts, chopped
2 tsp. vanilla extract
2 tsp. almond extract
2 tsp. anise extract
1 shot (1 oz.) of whiskey or brandy
1 shot (1 oz.) sweet vermouth

Directions:
Cream the butter and crisco. Then add the sugar and eggs (one at a time), alternating until all is incorporated.

Sift flour, then measure, then sift again. Add the salt and baking powder in the last sift.

Then alternate adding the liquids and flour mixture ( flour, salt, and baking powder) to the egg mixture.

Stir in nuts.

Prepare baking pans with either parchment paper or well grease the pans with shortening.

Spread dough on baking pans in three "logs" (2 inches wide by 1/2 inch tall). Use your fingers and a spoon to spread dough.

Bake at 350 degrees F. high in the oven for about 15 minutes until they are golden brown.

Remove the cookies from the oven and slice dough on an angle and turn each cookie on it's side. Bake an additional 8 to 10 minutes.

Take cookies out again and turn each cookie over to the other side and bake again for 6 to 10 minutes.

Remove and let cool completely. Cover or top some of the biscotti cookies with chocolate if desired.

Just melt 8 oz. of chocolate chips in a double boiler and add 1 or 2 tsp. of shortening and stir. Dip or butter the cookies in chocolate.

These cookies make a wonderful gift at Christmas.

Happy Holidays!
