Mochi with Goma (Sesame) Miso Sauce | Graces Japanese Cooking

Sweet, savory and delicious. If you love mochi and sesame, you will LOVE THIS recipe! I first had mochi with sweet sesame miso paste called “gohei-mochi” in Takayama, my hubby’s hometown. It’s a very traditional and popular local treat served on a wooden stick (kinda like a popsicle) with the sweet miso paste coating the mochi and toasted on an open flame. Imagine the aroooommaaa!!!! Mmmmmm..... so good. I need to go back:)

Today I made a not as sweet version(you can totally make it sweeter by adding more sweetener) that is easier to make but just as good! Enjoy:)

Recipe: (2-3 small mochi)

2-3 small mochi
3 tablespoons toasted sesame seeds (white or black or mixed)
2 teaspoons miso (sorry for the mistake in the video)
2 1/2 teaspoons maple syrup
1 teaspoon water

*if you like a more creamier consistency, add 1 teaspoon of tahini paste or your favorite nut butter.

1. Toast the sesame seeds on low heat. Be careful not to burn them. Stop the heat as soon as you hear a pop!
2. Grind seeds in a Japanese mortar and pestle. The more you grind the smoother it will be.
3. Add miso, maple syrup, water and combine well.
4. Toast the mochi on low heat over direct heat, in a frying pan, or in a toaster oven. When the mochi is ready, about 10 minutes, the outside should be somewhat crispy and golden brown, and the inside soft and chewy. The mochi will start to puff up and break the outer layer when it’s done.
5. Top mochi with the goma miso paste and enjoy!!!

Thank you for watching! If you have any questions or comments please leave them in the space below!

*Mochi can be found in any Japanese or Asian grocery stores. Some are round, some are square. They’re all the same. Choose one that works for you:)

Also, be careful when eating mochi as it’s chewy and may be a choking hazard. Just take extra care with kids and older adults:). Enjoy in small portions and chew well.
