A popular seafood recipe from Maharashtra where 'Mori' means shark fish and 'kalvan' means curry. Flavourful and comforting!
MORICHA KALVAN

Ingredients

3-4 medium shark fish (mori), peeled, cleaned and cut into 2 inch pieces
4 tbsps oil
2-3 green chillies, stemmed and broken
1 inch ginger piece
6- 8 garlic cloves
1 cup scraped coconut
2 green chillies, chopped
2 medium onions, chopped
Salt to taste
2 medium tomatoes, chopped
4-5 kokum petals
½ tsp turmeric powder
1 tsp red chilli powder
1½ tsps malvani masala
2 tbsps chopped fresh coriander + for garnish

Method

1. Heat 2 tbsps oil in a pan. Add green chillies, ginger, garlic and sauté for a minute.
2. Add coconut and sauté till golden brown. Allow to cool.
3. Transfer in a blender jar, add ½ cup water and grind to fine paste.
4. Heat remaining oil in a pan. Add green chillies and sauté for a few seconds. Add onions, salt and sauté till golden brown.
5. Add tomatoes and cook till pulpy. Add kokum petals and mix well. Add shark fish and mix well.
6. Add turmeric powder, red chilli powder and mix well. Add malvani masala and mix well.
7. Add the ground paste and mix. Add 1½ cups water and mix well.
8. Once the mixture comes to a boil, cover and cook for 5-6 minutes. Add coriander and mix well.
9. Transfer in a serving bowl, sprinkle coriander and serve hot with steamed rice.
