Tan Hock Seng Confectionery () 86 Telok Ayer Street

Established since 1931 at China Street by founder Mr Tan Tiam, over the last 90 years, the confectionery specialising in Hokkien pastries has been offering all-time favourite traditional treats. Among the best sellers are Beh Teh Saw (Horse Hoof Biscuit), Phong Piah (Fragrant Biscuit) and Tau Sar Piah (Mung Bean Paste Biscuit).

During the mooncake festival, traditional mooncakes filled with like lotus, red bean pastes, and Wu Ren (mixed nuts) are made. Preserved winter melon and lard are also used. Besides those, Scholar Piah () is also produced once a year in September. Interestingly, the third-generation owner, Mr Tan Boon Chai, shared that the pastry used to be associated with gambling in the past, in a light-hearted manner.

Sadly, the shop will be close end Nov 2021 due to a manpower shortage and rising rental fees. Mr Tan hopes that someone can take over the business to help preserve the heritage and tradition.
