Thayir vadai/Curd vada/Dahi vada/ Dahi balla | Gayathiri's Cookbook

Thayir vada/ Dahi vada is a traditional South Indian recipe. It is basically medhuvada/Ulunthu vada dipped in thick curd and garnished with bondi. Medhuvada/Ulunduvada is a great appetizer.
Medhuvadai with Idly/pongal and chutney/sambar isa popular breakfast combo in south india.

Ingredients:
Uraddal- 1.5 cups
Oil- For frying
Green chillies- 5
Jeera- 1/4 tsp
Salt- As needed
Shredded coconut- 1/4 cup
Curd/yogurt- 1 cup
Mustard seeds- 1/2 tsp
Red chilli powder- For garnishing
Boondhi or omapodi- For garnishing

Directions:
1.Soak 1.5 cups uraddal for about 4 hours. Grind uraddal by sprinkling some ice cold water now and then until its fluffy.Add 2 green chillies while grinding.Take a small amount of batter and put it in water. If it floats then you can switch off the grinder.
2.Add 3/4 tsp salt and keep it aside.
3.Grind 1/4 cup coconut with 1/4 tsp jeera and 3 green chillies into a paste.Add 2 cups curd/yogurt and 1/2 tsp salt to the grounded coconut paste. Mix it well and then keep it aside.
4.Heat oil in a kadai. Take a small amount of batter, make a ball, put a hole using your thumb and fry it in oil.
5.Fry till both sides are crisp and golden brown.Take hot water in a bowl. Dip the fried uradvada in hotter for 2 minutes. Then squeeze the water out.
6. Take a small amount of curd mix in a bowl. Put the squeezed vadai in curd immediately.
7. Garnish with red chilli powder, Boondhi/omapodi and coriander leaves.
Curd vada is ready!!
