Long pepper / Thippili / Pipli is an Indian spice with medicinal qualities and rejuvenating properties. It will be readily available at Indian grocery stores as Thippili or Pipli. 

In Tamilian kitchens this used to be a common ingredient, especially during monsoon and winter seasons. Rasam made with this spice is very helpful to keep the respiratory tract healthy and provides relief from cough and cold.

Long pepper / Thippili benefits:
Long pepper is used in Ayurveda and Siddha medicines to treat insomnia, diabetes, weight loss, arthritis, but most importantly for ailments relating to respiratory system such as cough, asthma, bronchitis and problems relating to digestive system such as indigestion, stomachache, heartburn and diarrhoea.

Ingredients:

For Rasam:
1. Tamarind - 1 Gooseberry sized
2. Hot water - enough to soak
3. Mustard seeds - 1/2 tsp
4. Black gram - 1/4 tsp
5. Ghee - 1/2 tsp
6. Tomato - 1
7. Jaggery (optional) - a tiny piece
8. Salt - to taste
9. Turmeric powder - 2 pinches
10. Water - 1.5 cups
11. Coriander leaves - 1 handful

For Rasam powder:
12. Oil - 1/2 tsp
13. Cumin seeds - 1/2 tsp
14. Black peppercorns - 1/2 tsp
15. Coriander seeds (Dhania) - 1/4 tbsp
16. Red gram (Toor dal) - 1/2 tbsp
17. Red chilli - 1
18. Garlic cloves - 5 or 6
19. Curry leaves - 1 sprig
20. Long pepper (Pipli) - 6 or 7
