one of the traditional authentic recipe from Mangalore. Kadle balyar combination is very authentic dish kadle means brown chickpeas and blalyar means dry shark fish. This recipe is a compulsory menu during baby shower function in Mangalore. I hear that even elite wedding receptions have Ganji l-Balyaar Chutney on the menu.

Only the ones who have tasted this delicacy will know the magic of savoring a dry fish delicacy on a rainy day.

Dry Fish was the ideal seafood option during the monsoons It is during the ban period that fresh fish become so rare the non-vegetarian households in the entire coastal stretch yearn to relish some lip-smacking fish delicacies. While fresh fish is far from being available, a smell- liked and disliked in equal measures that emanates from the most household, whether it is a hut or a tiled house, a middle-class RCC house or a huge manor of the region, from restaurants to hotels. The smell is of sumptuous delicacies made out of dry fish, which becomes an alternative for fresh fish during monsoon.
The local Mangalorean fish-eating community literally survives on dry fish during the wet season.

A huge Mangalorean Diaspora living outside Mangaluru too are crazy about dry fish. Hence dry fish are often parcelled to Mumbai, Dubai and other areas for the families living there by their relatives living here in the coast. even I live in Mumbai could not find these balyar fish hear. Finally, I told my mom to parcel it.

all variety of fish is not dried and only specific varieties of fish are dried. But, have a look at any fish-eating Mangalorean communities, it is a variety called ‘Kolla Tharu’, ‘Balyaar’ and ‘Podi Yetti’ (prawn variety) that are the hot favourites during this season. Balyaar rules the roost and the cost of this variety can shoot up to Rs 500 per kg!
