Kadappa is a very popular sidedish for Idly and Dosa from the Kumbakonam area of Tamilnadu.It’s a very unique and delicious gravy made with moongdal, potatoes and mild spices.Ingredients:Moongdal- 1/4 cupPotatoes(medium size)-4Oil- 2 teaspoonMustard seeds- 1/2 teaspoonCinnamon sticks- 2Bay leaves- 2Cloves- 4Onion-1Ginger- A small pieceGarlic cloves- 4Turmeric powder- 1/2 teaspoonSalt- 3/4 teaspoonShredded coconut- 1/2 cupGreen chillies- 5Fennel seeds- 1 teaspoonRoasted bengal gram-1/4 cupSoaked poppy seeds- 1 teaspoonCoriander leaves- for garnishingDirections:1. Pressure cook 1/4 cup moongdal with 1 cup water for upto 4 whistles.2. Boil 4 medium potatoes. Peel the skin and cut into squares.keep it aside.3. Heat 2 teaspoon oil in a pan.Add mustard seeds .When it starts to splutter, add cinnamon sticks, bayleaves, cloves, ginger garlic and onion. Sauté onion until translucent. 4. Now add potatoes, turmeric powder and salt. Mash potato slightly and sauté for a minute.5. Then add cooked moongdal. Let it boil for 5 minutes on medium flame.6. Grind shredded coconut, green chillies, fennel seeds, ginger, roasted bengalgram and poppy seeds into a fine paste.7. Add ground paste to the gravy. Mix it well.8. Adjust the consistency by adding water. Let it boil for another 2 minutes.9. Garnish with coriander leaves.
