Pork Buns & Shark Fin Soup - Off the Street at Yokohama Chinatown

In 1859, Yokohama Port became one of the first ports to be opened to international trade after Japan's two centuries of isolation. The chinatown was established soon afterwards, and remains Japan's largest today. It is known as the worlds best Chinese food spot to experience the best selection of all the regional Chinese cuisines and famous dishes. There are over 600 restaurant and shops crammed into a couple of city blocks, which are easily covered in one afternoon.

After passing through the entrance gate from any direction, you are immediately enveloped in the middle of a passionate and bustling town. The atmosphere is especially unique and vibrant on a weekend evening. Barkers from a huge number of restaurants and food stalls, cute and colorful sundries shops, fortune-teller stands, and so on, call out in loud voices to entice customers. The most prominent signature cuisine as you walk through the streets is dim sum, in particular, Chinese pork buns. This dim sum staple is a must-try, and it will be hard to stop at just one after savoring these hot, juicy, tender, and flavorful delights. Almost as impressive is the delicious Shark fin soup that is served right on the street at just 350 yen a bowl, or less than $3!
