Having learnt to cook Nasi Padang from a Malay helper, stall owner Mr Hee started his Nasi Padang business in 1976 at Pasir Panjang before shifting to Cantonment Road in 2011.Interestingly, Mr Hee () was an author, and a national book prize recipient for his book, . Writing letters was a common way of communication in the 1970s. His excellent writing skills had warmed the heart of his wife, who was his primary school classmate. The husband and wife duo arrive at the stall early in the morning to prepare for the day. There is an assortment of dishes on their menu, including rendang, assam fish, petai (stink beans), stir-fried pineapples and eggplant. Nasi Padang 8789 is not located in a hawker centre, but rather, a coffee shop along Cantonment Road.
